Following the revelations and discoveries of the previous day, Slaine and Spark purchase armour enchantments from the smiths of the Marketplace to block the psychic attacks of the fell taints, while Kaddik perfects an alchemical oil that might neutralise the creatures’ insubstantial nature. Caleb studies the crystal ball he obtained from Jaris, along with the helm of seven deaths, and Ash bonds further with the invulnerable coat of Arnd.
In the warm light of day, no-one notices a slight crust of thought infection beginning to well up around the stones of the vision circles scattered around Stormreach.
The adventurers then meet at the Refinery to discuss how to find and confront the Storm Hammers. Caleb’s crystal ball has a limited scrying range, so they need to narrow down the possibilities before using it. Knowing that the Hammers were seen going downriver when they left Dannel’s Pride, they decide to investigate the Harbour District further and ask Harbourmaster Zin about suspicious behaviour. While he’s no help, his office is full of people coming and going, and a woman tells them that she saw a boat heading into the Harbour the previous day with some odd occupants, including one that may have been Master Aedan.
As the day progresses, corrupted thoughts continue to foam and seep from the vision circles, but go unnoticed.
The adventurers hire a boat and head into the harbour, suspecting that Shargon’s Talon, the island temple of the sahaguin, might be the Storm Hammers’ destination. In order to better scope out the area and find the best place to use the crystal ball, they stop at the Lighthouse, which is also on a small island in the Harbour. Towering hundreds of feet high, the Lighthouse is also a private library kept by the eccentric scholar Eldamir Fallowcrest, but his warforged butler tells the adventurers that he is busy studying. Ash, Caleb and Kaddik go into the Lighthouse to meet him while Slaine and Spark remain outside. They separate further when inside, Ash and the butler going to the second floor of the library (there are no stairs further up to the light) while the others remain below with a pair of students.
Separation proves to be a mistake when Ash finds the body of Fallowcrest at the back of the library, along with some kind of portal apparatus. The butler and students reveal themselves to be Storm Hammers, and a pair of fell taints emerge from hidden alcoves to attack! A messy, desperate battle ensues, and Ash comes close to death before the adventurers are finally able to overcome the mad gangsters and their monsters. They bind their wounds and examine the magical equipment – as the sun begins to set and the telepathic gunk on the vision circles grows ever thicker…
